Sderot has been subject to a daily barrage of Qassam rockets in 2007. They were granted Israeli citizenship and the right to vote. Soon, the use of force expanded to include tanks, helicopter gunships and even F-16 fighter planes. Israel regards all forms of Palestinian opposition to the occupation as threats to its national security, including non-violent methods like calling for boycotts, divestment and sanctions. In May 2010 the moderate Islamist party ruling Turkey expressed its sympathy for Hamas by permitting the Mavi Marmara, sponsored by the Islamist Humanitarian Relief Foundation, to join a flotilla to relieve the besieged population of the Gaza Strip.
